Food trailers for sale in Georgia
We deliver kitchen and coffee trailers from Houston to Atlanta, Savannah and the rest of Georgia. Here is how Georgia permits, titles and taxes a food trailer.
Health permit: county board of health
Mobile food units are permitted by the county board of health (environmental health) where your base of operation is, under the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) Food Service Rules, Chapter 511-6-1. Each unit gets its own Mobile Food Service Unit Permit.
Since January 1, 2023 (HB 1443), that permit is recognized statewide. Before you vend in another county, you get an authorization to operate from that county, which checks that your permit is in good standing. No new inspection is needed, and any fee is limited to the county's costs.
- Base of operation: your own, not shared with another permit holder, with at least a dump station or mop sink, a hand sink and a drinking-water tap. The unit returns there daily.
- Restroom within 200 ft of where you vend, with a written agreement.
- Application: menu, a drawing to scale, photos, equipment spec sheets and proof of zoning and fire compliance, then a preoperational inspection.
- Tanks: no minimum fresh-water size, but the waste tank must be 15% larger than the fresh tank. Ours are 40 gal fresh and 53 gal waste.
- Fees are set by each county board of health.
DPH advises getting your permits before you invest money. Send us your county's application and we prepare the drawing and equipment spec sheets for it.
Fire and propane
Georgia's state minimum fire safety standards adopt the International Fire Code with a Georgia amendment: mobile food vehicles with smoke- or grease-producing appliances must comply with NFPA 96, the standard for hoods and their fire protection. Inspections are done by the local fire marshal. Our cooking trailers have a hood and a fire suppression system tagged in Houston.
Title and registration
Title and register at your County Tag Office (Georgia Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division). Georgia titles trailers weighing 2,001 lb or more, which includes equipped food trailers.
- Form MV-1, Title/Tag Application
- Georgia driver's license or ID
- Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin assigned to you by your full legal name
- An itemized bill of sale
The title fee is $18 and a trailer plate is $12.
Sales tax
Georgia's one-time title ad valorem tax (TAVT) does not apply to trailers without a motor. They are subject to sales and use tax instead: 4% state plus local tax, so the total depends on your county. You pay it at the County Tag Office when you title the trailer, and trailers also owe annual ad valorem tax. When we ship the trailer to you by carrier, no Texas sales tax is charged; see nationwide delivery.
Rules and fees change and some cities and counties add their own. Confirm current requirements with the agency before you buy or apply.
