Food trailers for sale in New Mexico
We deliver kitchen and coffee trailers from Houston to Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe and the rest of New Mexico. Here is how New Mexico permits, titles and taxes a food trailer.
Health permit: NMED or Albuquerque
The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Food Program permits mobile food establishments everywhere in the state except the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, which run their own food programs. A trailer that works in Albuquerque or Bernalillo County needs that local permit.
- Plans first: NMED asks for plans and the fee at least 30 calendar days before construction or conversion, and the permit application 30 days before opening, followed by an opening inspection.
- Registration first: the NMED application asks for proof of MVD registration, so title and register the trailer before you apply.
- Servicing area: a unit that is not self-contained needs a servicing-area (commissary) agreement and reports there at least daily. A self-contained unit states where it is cleaned and stored.
- Toilets within 200 ft if you park for more than 2 hours.
- Fees: the annual NMED permit has been $200; new NMED fees took effect October 1, 2026, so confirm the current schedule when you apply.
Albuquerque: the permit is tied to your commissary address and the unit visits the commissary daily. The fire department inspects before the health inspection. Cooking with grease needs a Type I hood with fire suppression and a Class K extinguisher, and the wastewater tank must be at least 15% larger than the fresh tank. Ours are 40 gal fresh and 53 gal waste.
Propane
New Mexico's LP-gas rule (19.15.40 NMAC) adopts NFPA 58 and NFPA 54, and propane work on trailers and similar units in New Mexico must be done by an LP-5 or LP-6 licensee. Some local governments add their own propane inspection; Los Alamos County, for example, asks for one by the state LP Gas Bureau.
Title and registration
Title and register with the Motor Vehicle Division (Taxation and Revenue Department) within 30 days of purchase.
- The original Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (photocopies are refused)
- The dealer's invoice, which MVD asks for even from an out-of-state dealer
- A weight certificate if the Certificate of Origin does not show the empty weight
- Your ID and proof of New Mexico residence
Permanent registration is only for trailers under 6,001 lb that are not used in commerce, so a food trailer is registered every year.
Motor vehicle excise tax
New Mexico charges a motor vehicle excise tax of 4% of the price, paid to MVD when you apply for the title. Sales tax already paid to another state is credited. When we ship the trailer to you by carrier, no Texas sales tax is charged; see nationwide delivery.
Rules and fees change and some cities and counties add their own. Confirm current requirements with the agency before you buy or apply.
