16 ft food trailer: size, weight and layout

16 ft is the most common length for a kitchen trailer: enough room for a cooking line, refrigeration, sinks and 3 to 4 people. Here is what that size means in practice.

Dimensions

Our 16 ft kitchen trailers measure 16 to 16.4 ft for the body and about 6.6 to 7.1 ft wide, plus the tongue. That width lets the trailer ship inside a shipping container; many US-built concession trailers are 8.5 ft wide. Interior height is about 7 ft.

Weight

Manufacturer specifications for comparable stainless trailers list empty weights of roughly 2,400 to 4,000 lb before equipment, water and supplies; one 16 ft body is listed at 1,800 kg (about 3,970 lb). Water alone adds about 8.3 lb per gallon, so a full 40 gallon fresh tank adds about 330 lb.

The number that matters for towing is the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) on the trailer's federal label, which shows the most it may weigh loaded, along with the rating of each axle (GAWR). Match your tow vehicle, hitch and brake controller to the GVWR, not the empty weight.

A typical 16 ft layout

  • Cooking line under the hood along one wall: griddle, fryer and charbroiler, with fire suppression nozzles above.
  • Service window on the curb side with a serving shelf outside and a POS spot inside.
  • Sinks near the door: 3-compartment sink with drainboards and a separate hand sink, water heater below.
  • Cold storage under counters: refrigerator, freezer or refrigerated prep table.
  • Propane cylinders outside on the tongue in a protected box, with a shut-off valve and signs.
  • Power inlet on the outside wall, breaker panel inside within reach.

We draw your layout around your menu and crew and include it with your build sheet.

Is 16 ft enough?

For most taco, burger and BBQ menus run by 3 to 4 people, yes. Beverage businesses usually choose 11.5 to 13 ft. If you need two cooking lines or more staff, ask us about longer builds.
